HUBBUB #7 Recap & Winners Announcement

On Tuesday, December 6th, 2022, we gathered in person at the CapU Lonsdale campus to celebrate the hard work of CapU students, faculty, and City of North Vancouver partners this Fall 2022 term at HUBBUB #7.

From the CapU community, in attendance at HUBBUB #7 was our CapU President, Vice President, Academic & Provost and some Department Deans to celebrate all of the students’ projects from the Fall 2022 term. CityStudio North Vancouver appreciates all of the work the students have put into their projects, and it couldn’t have been possible without our partners, instructors and volunteers.

This year our panellists include:

Kathryn Sorensen: a community police office coordinator from the North Vancouver RCMP Detachment/ Government of Canada

Tricia Alsop: Manager of Communication/ Community/ Resource Development and North Shore Neighbourhood House

Renée de St. Croix: Manager, Long Range + Community Planning, Planning Development at City of North Vancouver

WINNERS CHOSEN BY PANEL:

1st Place:  GEOG 316 for Water Harvesting Project

CityStudio North Vancouver Partner: Emily Dicken, North Shore Emergency Management (NSEM) 

Congratulations to students Áine Corrigan-Frost, Dilkarn Singh and Dee Warapitiya on winning first place at this year’s HUBBUB #7. The “Water Harvesting Project” is to promote building a city-wide rainwater harvesting system in the City of North Vancouver. To learn more about their project, click on the link below.

2nd Place: TOUR 312 Central Lonsdale is for You!

Instructor: Allan Florendo

CityStudio North Vancouver Partner: Siobian Smith, Manager, Economic Development, City of North Vancouver

The second-place winner was “Central Lonsdale is for You!” presented by students Brooke Moriarity, Juliana Mai, Skylar Wan, Van Anh Pham and Leila Zehtabfard. The “Central Lonsdale is for You!” project raises awareness and promotes economic growth in the Central Lonsdale neighbourhood. Their campaign includes social media marketing and holding an art event to bring more awareness to that neighbourhood. To learn more about their project, click the link below.

3rd Place: GEOG 316 Climate Resilience- Food Waste

CityStudio North Vancouver Partner: Emily Dicken, North Shore Emergency Management (NSEM) 

The third-place winner was “Climate Resilience – Food Waste,” presented by students Anastasiia Brovarets, Adiyara Zakhanova, Cristian Ponce, Max Fonseca and Parsa Eskandari. Their project aims to bring awareness of food waste by bringing the FOODTOGO app to the City of North Vancouver to encourage the public to buy food at 1/3 of the price to conserve food from going to waste at the end of the day. In addition to the project showcase award, CityStudio North Van offers the Audience Choice Award. To win this award, students, city staff, friends and family vote for the project of their choice. They can do this by voting online on the project page or in person. City Studio North Van created origami stars as ballots for in-person voting to add a fun twist.

AUDIENCE CHOICE WINNERS:

CMNS 405 Urban Re-Purpose Media Awareness Campaign

Instructor Name: Alaa Al-Musalli 

CityStudio North Vancouver Partners: Tom Riessner, Executive Director, Urban Repurpose and Annie Dempster, City of North Vancouver

One of the Audience Choice winners was CMNS 405 with Urban Re-Purpose Media Awareness Campaign presented by students Christabel Edwin, Shahana, Karanveer Singh Multani and Anmol Sethi. This project was voted audience choice award for both online and in-person. The purpose of their project is to create a campaign to reduce the amount of construction waste by recycling old wood into household items. To learn more about their project, click the link below.

The second recipient of this reward is GEOG 316 Water Harvesting Project students. This group also wowed the crowd by winning first place in the panellist prize. Congratulations again.
